According to a witness report, a teenage girl had been attempting to grab hold of a ladder on a passing freight train when she suddenly slipped, causing one of her legs to go beneath one of the freight cars. As a result, part of her leg was severed when the train rolled over it. The girl remained conscious at the scene and the witness called 911, while the girl's friends stayed by her side until emergency personnel arrived. She was then transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus.
The area where the accident took place is near Greendale Mall and is a popular shortcut for kids heading to and from the mall. There is no indication as to why the girl attempted to grab hold of the train ladder, but the accident is still under investigation.
