Drug Trafficking Laws in Massachusetts
Controlled substances are categorized into Classes A through E under Massachusetts law. These classes are based on how dangerous the drugs are considered to be. Class A includes such narcotics as heroin and morphine while Class B includes methamphetamine, cocaine, PCP, and LSD.
How you are punished upon a drug trafficking conviction will depend on the Class of drugs involved in your case as well as the amount.
As an example, 14 grams up to 28 grams of cocaine trafficking is punishable by three to 15 years in a state prison and / or fines of $2,500 up to $25,000. Cocaine trafficking involving 28 grams or more carries penalties of five to 20 years in prison with fines of $5,000 up to $50,000. Cocaine trafficking of 100 grams or more is punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison with fines of $10,000 up to $100,000.
Marijuana is classified as a Class D drug in Massachusetts. Under state law, marijuana trafficking involving between 50 and 100 pounds carries penalties of two and a half up to 15 years in a state prison or a jail sentence of one to two and a half years. Fines for marijuana trafficking start at $500 and can range up to $10,000. A driver's license suspension may also accompany convictions of these types of drug crimes.
