Barbara L. Horan
About
Attorney Barbara L. Horan is an experienced civil and commercial law attorney whose current practice focuses on tort claims -- civil claims to recover for negligent or intentional conduct that injures someone in some way. She has represented both plaintiffs and defendants from intake to trial on claims involving motor vehicle accidents, property defects causing slips, trips, and falls, defective products, wrongful death, and trademark infringement. She also handles collections work, defending debtors against unfair debt collection practices, and assisting plaintiffs who wish to use legal process to collect on judgments and other debts.
Background in Liability Claims
Attorney Horan graduated from Boston University School of Law in 2001 with a concentration in Litigation and Dispute Resolution. She is currently admitted to practice in Massachusetts state courts, in the Federal District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and in the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
In 2005, she co-chaired a jury trial on a multi-million dollar premises liability claim that resulted in the largest defense verdict in Massachusetts for that year, upheld on appeal. She litigated a successful defense of a premises liability case in 2009 involving window-washers who were seriously injured when they fell from the rooftop of an office building. She filed, and, in 2014, successfully settled a federal court whistle-blower case against a pharmaceutical manufacturer on behalf of an employee who was unlawfully discharged for reporting health and safety violations in the manufacturing process.
Familiarity with Complex Laws
Attorney Horan obtained a six-figure settlement of claims brought under the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Act and Massachusetts Fair Employment Practices Act on behalf of an employee who was terminated for low sales volume due to military leave. In 2015, she successfully settled a lawsuit filed against a bowling alley on behalf of a client who suffered a broken wrist as a result of the negligent maintenance of the premises. She recovered tens of thousands of dollars in a collection action filed in 2015 on behalf of client who had made an unsecured loan to a Massachusetts business.
As an associate at Flanagan and Associates, LLC Attorney Horan continues her thorough, diligent, and relentless practice to achieve just compensation for her clients through informed settlement negotiations and skilled discovery, motion, and trial practice.
Prior to practicing law, Attorney Horan received a B.A. from Oberlin College with a double-major in Psycho-biology and Philosophy, a M.S. from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in Ecology and Behavioral Biology, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in Philosophy.
